How to Launch a Startup: 10 Phases
Starting a startup doesn't just open
your doors or launch your web site.
It's about the preparation to
launch even before that happens.
Planning has a certain art form and those who have launched a number of startups — like we
have — are approaching launching a new project very differently than anyone who is just beginning their first startup.
1. Identify the problem, not the solution.
We're all enamored with brilliant solutions: "It wouldn't be
great if ..." is the mantra of every new startup.
But it is much more important than the
problem is articulated than the solution right now.
For example, the solution might be that Netflix
delivers movies on any device for $15 a month.
But the issue is much
more important: the cables are too costly.
Broadcast television greatly restricts the
options of what you will watch.
People are now using mobile devices to consume content, as
opposed to their TVs, so multi-form factor performance is important.
All these issues should form the foundation
of what will eventually become of your solution.
The solution will change over
time as you get more.
2. Conducting fundamental studies
Until you raise a finger or speak to someone
about your idea, study the heck out of it online.
Every minute you spend in online research saves you 10 minutes of making your startup blindly, only
to find out that consumers are going to find a different approach to the problem you're solving.
Don't limit your analysis to "Is there
another company doing exactly the same thing?
"It might
not be there.
Instead, concentrate on "Where can I find examples of
how people approach this problem in a different way?
People were watching a lot
of movies in front of Netflix.
But it's not like the issue of
watching movies hasn't been solved in various ways.
Find out what consumers are spending on the issue right now. Scan online articles to find out if they're pleased with it.
You're creating an image of how the issue you're solving is being solved — and where the gaps are — so you can start formulating the best possible solution.
we will complete all phases later, stay tuned.
